2013 Report to the Community

With a continued focus on expansion and deeper use of the health information exchange, HEALTHeLINK marked a number of significant milestones in 2013. Learn more in our 2013 Report to the Community available to view online here!

Analysis of duplicate CT scans shows costs savings & enhanced patient safety

Through HEALTHeLINK, participating providers have instant access to diagnostic tests that have been conducted on their patients. Along these lines, HEALTHeLINK recently conducted an analysis of the number of multiple CT scans ordered for the same patient and on the same body part within six months utilizing clinical data available within its health information exchange.

The results are now available in HEALTHeLINK's latest white paper, "Study of Duplicate CT Scans Show Promise of Health Information Exchange" available here. Some of the key findings include:

  • Approximately 90% of the 2,763 potentially unnecessary duplicative CT scans were ordered by physicians who either never or infrequently used HEALTHeLINK
  • About 50% of the patients who had a duplicative CT scan had already consented to have their information accessed through HEALTHeLINK by their treating providers
  • More than 95% of the identified potentially unnecessary CT scans were done in a hospital setting
  • The lost opportunity to utilize HEALTHeLINK before ordering a CT scan could have resulted in savings in the health system of approximately $1.3 million

More hospitals now connected to HEALTHeLINK

Both Eastern Niagara Health System and Wyoming County Community Health System have joined HEALTHeLINK and are accessing and sharing patient health information electronically with health care providers across Western New York.

According to Dan Porreca, HEALTHeLINK’s executive director, “Hospitals are critical partners in fulfilling the promise of how health information technology can enhance patient care, especially as it pertains to serving diverse populations such as residents who live in rural areas like eastern Niagara County and Wyoming County."
