BUFFALO — Health-eLink, Western New York's clinical information exchange, is now allowing participating healthcare providers to access medical information about minors between the ages of 10 and 17. The access is the result of a change in state policy.
“For a child who may see several different physicians, having access to this information will allow for better more efficient care decisions," exchange director Dan Porreca said. "It is also helpful in those instances when the child’s grandparent or another caregiver brings them for an appointment and they do not have the child’s medical history readily available.”
Through the state clinical information exchange, with a patient's permission, care providers throughout New York can access the patient's medical history to know about past and present conditions and treatments.
Medical information about minors is accessible to care providers only in cases where a parent or legal guardian signed a consent form on a child's behalf. The form can be obtained from any participating provider's office or downloaded from www.wnyhealthelink.com.
